Only about 400 m from the coast of the Kailua Beach away, lies this tiny island, also known as the Flat Island is known. Popoi'a Island is breeding place for shearwaters, a bird species that have made the small island their own.
To see the island up close, there are different options. If you want to paddle across by kayak, you can go to the Kailua Beach rent one at various places. This is definitely one of the easiest ways to reach Iceland with relative ease. Who on Popoi'a Island may go ashore, should park the kayak at the small sandy section and try to keep the distance to the animals to disturb them as little as possible. A walk is possible only at the edge.
Another alternative is to rent a stand-up paddle, which are also available in rentals at the Kailua Beach there. However, depending on the swell, this requires a little more stamina and possibly prior experience with this sports equipment.
The idea of simply swimming over to the island should rather be discouraged. The current and the waves are not to be underestimated, even though it seems that Popoi'a Island is only a stone's throw away.
