Only about 400 m from the coast of Kailua Beach lies this tiny island, also known as the Flat Island . Popoi'a Island is a breeding place for shearwaters, a bird species that have made the small island their own.
There are different options to see the island up close. If you want to paddle there by kayak, you can go to Kailua Beach to rent one at various places. This is definitely one of the easiest ways to reach the island with relative ease. If you want to go ashore onPopoi'a Island, you should leave the kayak at the small sandy section and try to keep a distance from the animals to disturb them as little as possible. A walk is possible only at the edge.
Another alternative is to rent a stand-up paddle, which is also available at Kailua Beach However, depending on the swell, this requires a little more fitness and possibly prior experience with this sports equipment.
The idea of simply swimming over to the island should rather be discouraged. The current and the waves are not to be underestimated, even though it seems that Popoi'a Island is only a stone's throw away.
