Surf paradise at the North Shore in Maui
A true paradise for surfers, Ho'okipa Beach Park is widely known among water sports enthusiasts. Ho'okipa means hospitable and visitors can watch the best of the best surfers here in the winter months or, with enough experience, plunge into the powerful waves themselves.
Ho'okipa Beach Park is located on the North Shore of the island of Maui and is not exactly known as a swimming beach. The reef and the gigantic waves are too dangerous to go swimming or to relax. The beach is much more known among surfers for its distinctive reef system and the resulting great waves. The reef stretches evenly across the entire bay and allows the massive waves to break perfectly. Those who are experienced in surfing can jump into the powerful waves themselves, those who are beginners should rather watch the action from the shore. At the side edge, there is a viewing platform, especially for viewers, which is equipped with picnic tables as well as pavilions. Two food trucks ensure that the visitors do not have to watch the spectacle with an empty stomach and all kinds of delicacies are sold.
Ho'okipa Beach Park is known for another highlight besides surfing. Every evening, as the blazing sun bathes the sky in vibrant orange colours, countless green sea turtles come to rest on the beach. To ensure that no one gets too close to the protected creatures, volunteers are on site every day to keep an eye on the behaviour of tourists and intervene if necessary.
Parking info:
Directly in front of the access to the beach, some parking spaces are offered for visitors.
