The large beach park near the city of Hilo is especially suitable for families, as the sea here is very shallow and the stone walls serve as breakwaters. Depending on the tides, small pools form where even small children can splash around wonderfully and safely. The water depth of this protected water park ranges from about 1 - 5 feet, making it a real paradise for families. The park features a smaller sandy area, a large grassy area, and lava rock formations characteristic of Big Island.
Since there are steps and ramps at Onekahakaha Beach, easy access to the water is possible for all ages and abilities. The large green area with picnic areas and cooking facilities, restrooms, showers, playground and shady trees, invites young and old to relax.
A real tip: head to Punalu'u Bake Shop and be seduced by the smell of this bakery's sweet delicacies. The Malasadas are similar to our "Berliner" and have different fillings.
