Onekahakaha Beach Park - description

The large beach park near the city of Hilo is especially suitable for families, as the sea here is very shallow and the stone walls serve as breakwaters. Even small children can splash around small pools wonderfully and safely depending on the tides. The water depth of this protected water park ranges from about 1 - 5 feet, making it a real paradise for families. The park features a smaller sandy area, a large grassy area, and lava rock formations characteristic of Big Island.

Since there are steps and ramps at Onekahakaha Beach, easy access to the water is possible for all ages and abilities. The large green area with picnic areas and cooking facilities, restrooms, showers, a playground and shady trees invite young and old to relax.

A real tip: head to Punalu'u Bake Shop and be seduced by the smell of this bakery's sweet delicacies. The Malasadas are similar to our "Berliner" and have different fillings.

What we say

Tommy
The perfect beach park to spend a relaxing day with the kids. Due to its size, Onekahakaha Park is not too crowded. Since it is very close to Hilo, the beach visit can be combined with a stroll through Big Island's capital. The famous Rainbow Falls are also just a few minutes drive away and could be another highlight of your route.
Our checklist & tips:
  • Ideal beach for children of all ages
  • Calm waters
  • Enjoy delicious "malasadas" from Punaluu Bake Shop, only a short drive from the beach
  • From January to March you can watch whales from the beach
  • Parking spaces available
