North Shore Hike - Description

The hike leads through the wild forests of the Pūpūkea Paumalū Forest Reserve. To get there, take the road up the mountain at Foodland (the only supermarket at the surf spots). You can either start the tour from Wilinau Road or continue on Pupukea Road until you pass Sunset Ranch outside the residential area. Shortly after that, Boy Scout Camp Pupukea is on the left. From there, a small trail leads into the forest.

This 10 km hike is relatively easy, with only 350 meters of elevation gain. You roam through unique, wild forests and have sensational views of deserted valleys, plateaus and the North Shore.

What we say

Florian
This hike is great for an early and great start to the day. Since most visitors only visit the North Shore for the beaches or one day, this hiking trail is a real insider tip. It is recommended to look for accommodation at the North Shore (e.g. Backpackers Hawaii for example, which is located only a few minutes from Foodland directly at Three Tables Beach) to enjoy the Aloha spirit (including this quiet hike) extensively.
Our checklist & tips:
  • Start either at "Wilinau Rd, Haleiwa, HI 96712" (geo-data: 21.653214054552258, -158.0526770181036) or "Pupukea Road, HI 96712" (geo-data: 21.64217572529189, -158.0253383678984).
  • In general, you should always make sure that you do not accidentally land on private property in Hawaii.
  • Best to take our hiking route on your cell phone! In the forest, there are countless paths that you can then choose spontaneously.
  • Hiking in Hawaii is generally recommended in the morning because it is not so hot yet. However, since the trail is hardly frequented, it can be done throughout the day.
