The Ka'au Crater Trail is about 8 kilometres of hiking with 560 meters of elevation. It doesn't sound too strenuous. But it is.
It leads through beautiful forests, past magnificent viewpoints and there are even several waterfalls as well as beautiful wildflowers. Due to the slope and distance, the route is suitable only for experienced adventurers. This is an excellent place to hike and enjoy a nature excursion. The route is accessible all year round.
It probably belongs to the most exciting hikes on Oahu. You sometimes climb up over the waterfalls which are often also equipped with ropes on trees. It starts in the northern district of Honolulu, in Palolo. An area that tourists usually do not go to. Up to Kaau Crater, the hike is manageable but if you want to hike up to the Puu Palikea viewpoint, you need strong nerves. On a very narrow and steep ridge, you walk up there almost 700 meters.
The view is sensational. Towards the south, you can see Honolulu and behind you is the east coast with Waimanalo and Kailua.
