Ka'au Crater Trail - Description

The Ka'au Crater Trail is about 8 kilometers of hiking with 560 meters of elevation gain. Doesn't sound too strenuous. But it is.

It leads through beautiful forest, past magnificent viewpoints and there are several waterfalls and beautiful wildflowers. Due to the slope and distance, the route is suitable only for experienced adventurers. This is an excellent place to hike and enjoy a nature excursion. The route is accessible all year round.

He probably belongs to the most exciting hikes on Oahu, you climb up over the waterfalls in part, which are often also equipped with ropes on trees. It starts in the northern district of Honolulu, in Palolo. An area where tourists usually do not go. Up to Kaau Crater the hike is well doable, but if you want to hike up to the Puu Palikea viewpoint, you need strong nerves. On a very narrow and steep ridge it goes up there to almost 700 meters.

The view is sensational. Towards the south you can see Honolulu, behind you is the east coast with Waimanalo and Kailua.

What we say

Florian
On this hike, the likelihood of meeting many people is not particularly high, as it is one of the absolute insider tips on Oahu. This hike is something for the adventurous. However, you should have sufficient physical and mental fitness. I have walked it myself and quite pushed my limits...
Our checklist & tips:
  • For hiking in Hawaii is generally recommended the morning, because then it is not yet so hot. However, since the trail is hardly frequented, it can be recommended throughout the day.
  • Professional hiking equipment! (Sturdy shoes, possibly poles and the right food are essential).
  • Especially for strenuous hikes like these, energy-giving snacks like nuts, soybeans, and at least 2 liters of water are necessary.
